The Golan Heights overlook Syria and Damascus. Looking out over Syria you can hear gunfire every couple of minutes. The Golan Heights is a continual place of protection for Israel as it is key to the water supply for all of Israel.
Even though it has been forty years since the Yom Kippur War has passed, Syria periodically attempts to take the Golan Heights for this strategic reason. As of late they are too busy fighting their own civil war.
