Melissa rapidly intensified as it approached the Caribbean, reaching major-hurricane strength (Category 4 and then Category 5) before its core impacted the region. It moved slowly (westward at only a few mph at times) near southern Haiti, causing heavy rainfall up to 16 inches. At least three people in Haiti have been reported killed due to landslide / flood-related causes. At least 450 homes have been damaged. This does not include tents.
Heavy rainfall caused flash flooding and landslides. Crops were damaged. Roads washed out.
Haiti doesn’t have a rescue response due to hindered infrastructure.
